A Trekker’s Paradise in Sri Lanka

Riverston Peak is a kid-friendly hike, and the weather conditions are well-manageable compared to other mountain peaks in the Knuckles Mountain Range. The climate is usually not very cool, as this mountain is much closer to the dry zone of Knuckles. However, during the rainy season and cold months, the wind speed and mist can cover the whole area, suddenly turning it into a very cold place. Visitors can explore all these places in Riverston within a day, but if you can allocate at least two or three days, you can travel to all destinations with proper planning.
The road to the top of the hill is narrow in some places, but any vehicle except for large vehicles can prepare for this trip. Having a four-wheel drive (4WD) vehicle will make your journey more comfortable. Additionally, keep in mind that Rattota is the final town where you can get everything you need.
Before reaching Riverston, visitors should be aware that there is a possibility of encountering wild elephants along the road. These animals are beautiful and majestic, but they are also wild and can be dangerous. Although they are not typically found at the peak of Riverston, it’s possible to encounter them on the road leading up to the area, particularly between 6 pm to 8 am. Therefore, it’s important for visitors to exercise caution and avoid getting too close to these majestic animals. Do not attempt to feed or touch them, and stay inside your vehicle or a safe distance away if you spot them. Additionally, always follow the instructions of local authorities and guides to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience.
