Experience the Magnificent Diyaluma Falls

The Second Highest Waterfall in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is a country filled with natural beauty and breathtaking landscapes. From lush green tea plantations to pristine beaches, there is no shortage of things to explore in this beautiful island nation. Amongst these beautiful natural wonders, the Diyaluma Falls is a must-visit destination that offers a unique experience for any traveler.

The Diyaluma Falls is the second-highest waterfall in Sri Lanka and is located in the Badulla District, just a one-hour drive away from the small town of Ella. This majestic waterfall stands tall at an impressive 220 meters and has different levels that offer visitors an unforgettable experience.

Getting to the foot of the Diyaluma Falls is quite easy and can be reached within an hour by tuk-tuk, car, or motorbike. The last 15 minutes of the drive will be uphill and the road isn’t the best from that point. However, the bumpy ride is worth it when you finally reach the foot of the waterfall.

As you start your journey towards the waterfall, you will pass a bridge and follow the path towards the waterfall. Once you have explored the foot, you can follow the road to Koslanda town. Make a sharp turn right and follow the road for another 15 minutes. Once you reach a split, turn to the right until Upper Diyaluma Trek Start point, and let the locals guide you where you should park your vehicle.

From here, you have to reach the waterfall with a 2-hour hike and a 40-minute walk through long grass, which has no marked path, but the views are out of this world. Be aware that elephants are active in this area, so it’s better not to walk alone or in the dark.

Once you reach the first part of the waterfall, you will face a series of natural pools where you can take a swim or even jump from one pool into a lower leveled pool. The sight of water coming down with great force on the rocks is amazing to experience on foot, but exploring the top is new and requires a certain level of fitness to reach. However, it’s worth it because the view from the top is truly breathtaking.

As you walk further down, you will come across a 220-meter drop with natural pools, even on the edge! It’s possible to dip in the one near the edge, but be extra careful. It’s better to just take a look over the edge of one of the highest waterfalls in Sri Lanka and see the bridge where you started. Make sure to bring enough water and food because you can easily spend the whole day on top of this incredible waterfall.

The area around the waterfall offers enough shaded areas to rest and relax, and you’ll likely come across friendly young locals who are hanging around here as well. They can guide you to the best spots to swim, jump or take stunning pictures. Make sure to add the Diyaluma Falls to your Sri Lanka route to experience this one-of-a-kind natural wonder.

The Upper Diyaluma waterfall is a hidden gem with breathtaking views and is an ideal spot for camping. You can pitch your tent and enjoy the natural surroundings with your friends or family. The peaceful sound of the waterfalls and the fresh breeze will make your camping experience even more enjoyable.

During your stay, make sure to explore the area and walk to the small upper Diyaluma waterfall which has three natural pools. One of these pools is deep enough for you to take a dip and cool off from the tropical heat. The scenery at this location is nothing short of magnificent, and you’ll be glad you made the effort to explore it.

As you enjoy your camping experience, please make sure to be respectful of the natural environment. Be sure to clean up after yourself and leave the area as you found it.

Overall, camping on top of the Upper Diyaluma waterfall is an unforgettable experience that is definitely worth considering. So pack your camping gear, gather your friends, and get ready for an adventure that you’ll remember for a lifetime.
