Essential Tips for Your Wangedigala Adventure
Hydration is Key: Ensure you bring an ample supply of water for drinking. While there are some spots with water for other needs, having enough for hydration is crucial.
Rain-Ready Gear: Be prepared for sudden rain showers. Pack raincoats, waterproof tents, and a reliable gas stove for cooking. Additionally, consider carrying firewood if you plan on having a campfire, as it may be scarce around the campsite when there are more campers.
Footwear and Leech Protection: The journey begins with a significant incline, and if you’re visiting during the rainy season, be vigilant about leeches. Wear shoes that can handle the wet and slippery terrain, especially between the fine trees.
Stay Informed About Climate: Check the weather conditions before your travel, particularly in dry seasons, as water availability may be limited.
Carry Sufficient Water: Water may be cannot supplied from above during dry season, so it’s crucial to bring enough for your entire trip.
A Glimpse from the Top
Reaching the Wangedigala peak offers a panoramic vista of Bambarakanda waterfall, Weli bend(Weli wanguwa), and the world’s end. The scenic environment coupled with the adrenaline rush from the hike creates an experience you’ll cherish forever.
Camping at Wangedigala
The camping site atop Wangedigala offers an incredible view, with plenty of space for campers. Even with six separate groups camping alongside us, there was room for all. A drinkable water source is conveniently located about 200 meters down the hill. And also, another natural water spot available near to the camp site (showing that in the video). Be prepared for cooler temperatures at night and pack accordingly.
Conquering the Peaks
There are several routes you can take to reach the Wangedigala camping site. Here are four different paths, each offering a unique experience:
Route 1: Bambarakanda Falls Trail
Starting Point: Bambarakanda Falls
Hiking Duration: Approximately 3.5 hours
Description: This is the most direct and popular route. It starts at the base of the impressive Bambarakanda Falls, providing a stunning backdrop for your hike. The trail takes you through diverse terrain, including lush forests and rocky paths. Keep an eye out for the fine trees and water sources along the way.
Route 2: Belihul Oya to Wangedigala
Starting Point: Belihul Oya
Hiking Duration: Approximately 6-7 hours
Description: For a more challenging and longer trek, consider starting from Belihul Oya. This route offers a different perspective of the landscape, taking you through remote areas and offering breathtaking views. Be sure to plan for an early start and carry extra supplies due to the extended duration.
Route 3: Kalupahana to Wangedigala
Starting Point: Kalupahana
Hiking Duration: Approximately 5-6 hours
Description: Beginning in Kalupahana, this route provides a different approach to Wangedigala. You’ll traverse through picturesque countryside, passing by local villages and potentially encountering wildlife. The journey offers a blend of natural beauty and cultural experiences.
Route 4: Wangedigala First Trail
Starting Point: Weli Oya Bridge
